Spread over an area of 746 km2, Ermera is located in the central part of the country and it has a population of 117,064 inhabitants (Census 2010). The capital of Ermera is Gleno, 58 km southwest of Dili. Among other agricultural practices, Ermera distinguishes itself as one of the major coffee growing areas.
The climate is characterized by two seasons, rainy (from October to May) and dry. As Ermera is a mountainous region, the climate is temperate. The sub-districts, which are higher (Letefoho, Atsabe), are colder than the other sub-districts. During the rainy season in these areas the temperature is around 15-17 degrees during the night.
